Working the Link: How to get the most out of your Millilinks Link

As soon as your link has been accepted into the millilinks directory, you’ve created a back link to your site. Now, you’ve got to make sure that people know about it. Most importantly, make sure that Google knows about it. The link should appear in Google about a week after the link is created.

Equally important, make sure your friends know about it. Encourage them to leave comments on the Millilinks site. They can give your site a review better than any else. They can vote in the poll.

Of course, don’t leave out the people that visit your site! This guys are invested in your site, too. They took the time to visit, read, and (hopefully) order a product. Give them chance to tell about their experience. How do you do this? With a link back to the Millilinks Directory.

Specifically, link to your page in the Millilinks Directory. They can vote for your site in the Millilinks Poll, they can leave a comment, view other sites like yours. This will definitely help your overall rank in Google!

How do you find the URL for your Millilinks link? Fortunately, we want to make this as easy as possible for you. All you have to do is click on the review link in your Millilinks link. The page that loads is your page. Now, just go up to the address bar, copy the URL listed there and insert that text as the target of your link.

This is the sort of deep link that Google loves to see on your site. Work it in to a blog post, put it into a signature on your forum posts, or send it out in a newsletter to your email list. You can work this in so many ways. Each time you use this, you increase your Millilinks exposure, which, in turn, increases your Google exposure.

You’ll be happy, we’ll be happy, your site stats will be ecstatic! This is the truth of the Millilinks Directory, our definition of success includes you!

The Millilinks Tutorial

August 4th, 2011

The Millilinks Directory is on a mission!

We provide (in our humble opinion) simply one of the best methods for promoting your website. Above even that, we do what we do for free!

So, here is our mission: To help you.

That’s pretty simple, isn’t it? We already provide free links, so you might be thinking what else can we do for you! Well, the simple truth is that the world of SEO is growing ever complicated. The search engines are constantly tweaking their algorithms, marketers respond and change their campaigns. Technology advances and change is the only constant.

So, a free link is no longer good enough.

Fortunately, The Millilinks Directory can provide you with more than just a free link. This tutorial will show you how to turn your free link into a powerful marketing tool!

Step 1 – Signing up for the Millilinks Directory

You’ve probably already taken this first step, but if not, go here to submit your site. Even if you have taken this step, do it again!

Why? well, there are several options available to you on the submission form. You can submit your site to a different catagory, or create a link to a sub-domain of your site, or even link to a specific page that you want to highlight.

Anyway, let’s talk about the submission form for a minute:

This is a form for submitting a link to the Millilinks Directory

You’ve probably filled out many of these sorts of forms. First, we get all the basic information about your site. The title, URL, Company name, and a short description.

Next, we simply ask you to tell us who you are. Input your name and an email address and a password. The password is very important. This will give you access to your listing. If you want to update your description, or add a review, you’ll need this password!

All that information will get the ball rolling, but, to make your link really stand out (and what separates the Millilinks Directory from so many other directory sites!)  will be the information you put in the Review section.

This is where your site comes alive in the Millilinks Directory. Tell us about your site, and you’ve just gained a great advantage over thousands of other sites. Use your keywords here! Please!

Now, click the Registration button. We will approve your link and then you’ll be listed in the Millilinks Directory!

Congratulations! You’ve just completed the first step of your Millilinks journey. My next post will continue with what to do after your site has been listed in the Millilinks Directory.

Identifying and Dealing With Comment Spam

May 5th, 2011

Running a little web site like this has it’s pluses and minuses. There are the joys of getting your highest amount of hits in a day or finally solving a problem with your code. But there are the lows, too! You have to keep up with a lot of little details, keep passwords straight and not try to hit anything when you type a wrong password in and get locked out of something for 20 minutes!

There’s also a lot of comment spam. Especially if you decide to set up a ‘do follow’ attribute to help attract visitors. Comment spam is a pain for those of us that legitimately want to promote our sites, and help others promote their sites. We have to carefully peruse the comments to make sure that we don’t miss a legitimate comment.

As I go through this process, it seems that several themes of comment spam constantly reappear.  And here is my list of the different types of comment spam I run in to (by the way, the quotes are actual comments I’ve had on my site):

  • The Praise Comment: “Just wanna remark on few general things, The website style is perfect, the subject matter is real fantastic : D.” – This type of commenter will give you the most glowing praise about your post and your website, without ever mentioning a single specific bit of information about your site! It’s not that I don’t mind a few words of praise, but when I recieve ten of the exact same comments, all with different gmail and ymail addresses, I get a little suspicious that, maybe, there isn’t a real person behind these comments.
  • The Product Plug Comment: “I want to buy a laser pointer pen, where should i go?” – Well, ok, so they don’t all directly promote a product! Of course, the website that this poster listed is a site that sells laser pointer pens! But, hey, where’s the love for me? You know, the guy that wrote the piece you are reading? if you aren’t going to acknowledge my topic, why should I promote yours?
  • The Help Desk Comment: “Thank you for the write up! Also, just a heads up, your RSS feeds aren’t working. Could you take a look at that?” – Well, either the RSS feeds are working, or this poor soul can’t find the RSS feeds, or there’s something wrong with your website. Where the praise commentor was playing on your ego, this commentor is playing on your inner worrier.
  • The Newbie Comment: “I love the look of your website. I recently built mine and I was looking for some ideas for my site and you gave me a few.” – The newbie always needs help and, after all, we were all newbies once. So you would love to help them, right? Well, except the website they listed is usually nonexistent and (drumroll please!) They give a gmail or ymail address for their email! Since you have probably received 20 or 30 of these comments, chances are that any replies you make to that gmail address are not going to get seen.

Each of these catagories have countless variations. But there are several common denominatores that will tip you to a spam comment:

  • Mangled English – In an effort to be unique, the poster will slip in whatever word they (or the computer generated script) can think of usually without any regard to grammatical structure. I don’t mind the problems that non-native speakers might have, but it’s pretty easy to spot when a sentence has been ran through a word changer.
  • Non-specifics – When someone comments on the points of your post, but never mentions what the point of your blog post is, then you have probably have a spam comment!
  • Weird website info – This is actually kind of confusing to me. Either the website info that they include in the post doesn’t exist, or it points to a completely bizarre site. For example, I had one comment that linked to a forum profile page that I couldn’t view because I had to be logged in. If the idea of comment spam is to try and get as many backlinks as possible, why bother linking to non-existent or inaccessable content?
  • Bogus email info – When an email address is unrelated to any information the poster has presented, it seems likely that it will be a bogus email. Once again, if you’re motive is to create a successful on-line presence, why would you want to give misleading information?

It’s nice that people want to comment. But it has to be real people. not some automatic comment posting or
